Time with the Hills and Chinese New Year's Party

We had a very busy week. Our missionary friends from China Andrew and Jamie Hills stayed with us for five days. David picked them up on Tuesday night. We were so happy to see them. Emily especially enjoyed having two house guests who loved her whole-heartedly. Wednesday night we had dinner at home before David and the Hills went to FriendSpeak. Thursday night we all met up with George, Carolyn, Bob, and Amy for a nice meal at Babe's. Friday night David made the birthday cake for Kendall and we wrapped the birthday gifts for Chloe. Did I mention that Emily had her 15-month checkup this week? She had three shots this time. She gave the nurse a sweet smile before the shots. I'm not sure she will do that again next time ... She still maintains her A+ from the doctor. We don't know when our little girl will slow down a little.

Saturday morning we headed over to Waco for Chloe's 2nd birthday and Kendall's birthday party. It was a very good celebration with family and friends. Unfortunately we had to leave in a hurry to prepare for the FriendSpeak's Chinese New Year's party. Here is the birthday girl Chloe. Isn't she cute?

I dropped David off at church on our way home so that he could start organizing the setting-up of the party. Emily and I came home to change our clothes. The party had a great turn-out. David really put a lot of effort in planning and organizing the activities. We had more people than we anticipated. While David and I were busy with the party, Emily enjoyed interacting with our friends. She only had very little nap in the car. But she did exceptional well at the party. I was surprised that she didn't fall asleep on the way home.

Sunday morning after church, our class had pot-luck lunch together. The food was so delicious that we were all stuffed. Andrew preached the evening service. He did a wonderful job. After the service, we had a small information meeting for LST led by Andrew and Gordon. Emily had another long day that she only had less than one hour of nap. But she was pleasant and happy as usual. Emily rocks!!! She developed deep friendship with Andrew and Jamie while they were here. When we sent the Hills off Monday morning, we told them that Emily definitely will miss them.

Emily loves to "bother" Andrew and Jamie in the middle of their busy work. This was when Andrew prepared his Sunday sermon, Emily stole a moment from him to play:

These two pictues were taken after Sunday information meeting. Can you tell that Emily had a long day already without her regular naps? (After an exciting week and two long days, Emily slept to 11:00am Monday morning. Ha!)

Jamie and Emily

"Hmm, Can we keep Andrew and Jamie longer in our house?"

Many of our favorite friends' birthdays fall in Febrary: Darren, Sandy, Sunny, Chloe, Kendall, Sue, etc. Happy birthday to you all!

We Will Ride

This year Valentine's Day and Chinese New Year fell on the same day. Our home celebration mixed the western culture with the eastern. Emily had the most fun because for Valentine's Day she got two Valentine's card (Thank you Cole and Charlie!), a big red Happy Valentine baloon (from mommy and daddy) and a Valentine bear (Thank you Gayla!); for Chinese New Year, she got two red envlopes from our FriendSpeak reader (Thank you Joey!) and church friend (Thank you Jim and Judy). She was so excited:

We had a big snow two days before the Valentine's Day. I've never seen such snow in 10 years while I'm in Texas. Emily learned to say "snow" (her version is more like "no"). Because Emily and I are both recovering from the cold, we didn't play much in the snow. Here is her asking:" Can I go out to play in the snow?"
Finally we couldn't resist the temptation and went out.
Emily trying to catch the Snow

"I got snow!!!"

Can I call Grandpa?
Hi Grandpa, listen: We got snow!!!

Quitting my job is not as easy as I thought. I proposed the resignation orally to my manager on Monday. Then my manager wanted to work out a plan for me to work from home for a couple of years. On Friday we were told that the upper management denied our request of working from home. So I am back to my formal resignation now. During the past 10 days, I experienced high and low emotions constantly. On one hand, my head told me that I'm risking our family's job security and stability. At least, it is a job that I can have for many more years, it has great benefits, it is very close to home, I have good co-workers, and the work itself is not stressful. What else can you expect from a job? On the other hand, my heart told me that it was the right thing to do to be with our kids, to instill a Godly character in them, and to maintain an orderly Christian home. I was so worried that things might go wrong after I quit my job. If only I can see what things will look like in a couple of months ... But Bible told us that faith is "being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see". A real test of faith happens only when you can't see the path right in front of you.

Sunday night David and I were reading Hebrew 11 (the famous "Hall of Faith" chapter) before going to bed. I was so encouraged by Abraham and Moses. By faith, Abraham left his home land and went to the promised land; By faith, Moses left Pharaoh's place and chose to be mistreated with People of God; Both of them obeyed God's highing calling and gave up their comfort. That reminded me of what Moses said when he led the people to cross the Red Sea:"Then Moses said to him (God), "If your Presence does not go with us, do not send us up from here." (Exodus 33:15). That was exactly what David and I desperately prayed.

Sunday morning (Valentine's day) in our Bible class, we learned this beautiful new song and it touched my heart deeply. You can hear it on Youtube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IWB1HCdoA44)

We Will Ride (Andy Park)

He has fire in his eyes
and a sword in his hand
and he's riding in a white horse
all across this land

(Repeat)

And he's calling out to you and me
"Will you ride with me?"

He has fire in his eyes
and a sword in his hand
and he's riding in a white horse
all across this land

And he's calling out to you and me
"Will you ride with me?" (x2)
We say "Yes" ("Yes Lord")
"We'll ride with you."

And we say "Yes, Lord"
"We will stand up and fight"
"We will ride with the armies of Heaven."
"Gonna be dressed in white" ("We'll be dressed in white")

And we say "Yes, Lord" ("Yes, Lord")
"We'll ride with you."

He has a crown on his hand
He's leading the armies
And he's calling out to you and me
"Will you ride with me?" (x2)

We say "Yes, Lord" ("Yes, Lord")
"We will ride"

And we say "Yes, Lord"
"We will stand up and fight"
"We will ride with the armies of Heaven."
"Gonna be dressed in white" ("We'll be dressed in white")

Can I hear you say "Yes, Lord?" ("Yes, Lord")
"We will ride."

And we say "Yes, Lord"
"We will stand up and fight"
"We will ride with the armies of Heaven."
"Gonna be dressed in white" ("We'll be dressed in white")

If I were you I would say "Yes, Lord" ("Yes, Lord")
"We will ride"

You see that fire in his eyes?
Is his love for his bride
And he is longing that you be with him
riding by his side

Yes that fire in his eyes
Is his burning desire
that his bride be with him
riding by his side

Can you hear him calling out to us right now
Saying "Will you ride with me?"

Lord, I know what I want my answer to be
When you say "Will you ride with me?"
Don't want anything down here holding on to me
When you say "Will you wide with me?"

Can you see that number (no man can number)
Riding along side Jesus
But he's calling out to us right now
Saying "Will you ride with me?"

And we say
"Yes, Lord" (x4)

It's not easy to "ride with Jesus". Sometimes it involves giving up money, status, or some life style changes; other times it involves being mistreated or misunderstood. But "God had planned something better for us so that only together with us would they be made perfect. " (Hebrews 11:40).

After a week's constantly joggling between being fearful and walking in faith, I finally decided to submit the formal resignation request.

Below is a Valentine's Day prayer to remind me of what a true love is on this Valentine's Day. I pray that it will manifest more and more in my life as I start the journey to ride along with Jesus.

A Valentine’s Day Prayer

“Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.” – I CORINTHIANS 13:4-7 NIV

Lord,
Because love is patient…
Help me to be slow to judge, but quick to listen.
Hesitant to criticize, but eager to encourage,
remembering your endless patience with me.

Because love is kind…
Help my words to be gentle and my actions to be thoughtful. Remind me to smile and to say “Please” and “Thank You”
because those little things still mean so much.

Because love does not envy or boast, and it is not proud…
Help me have a heart that is humble and sees the good in others. May I celebrate and appreciate all that I have and all that I am, as well as doing the same for those around me.

Because love is not rude or self-seeking…
Help me to speak words that are easy on the ear and on the heart. When I’m tempted to get wrapped up in my own little world, remind me there’s a great big world out there full of needs and hurts.

Because love is not easily angered and keeps no record of wrongs…
Help me to forgive others as you have forgiven me. When I want to hold onto a grudge, gently help me release it so I can reach out with a hand of love instead.

Because love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth…
Help me stand up for what is right and good. May I defend the defenseless, and help the helpless. Show me how I can make a difference.

Because love always protects and always trusts…
Help me to be a refuge for those around me. When the world outside is harsh and cold, may my heart be a place of acceptance and warmth.

Finally, because love always perseveres…
Help my heart continually beat with love for You and others. Thank you for this day when we celebrate love, and for showing us what that word really means.

Amen.

Finally, Happy Valentine's Day and Happy Chinese New Year to everyone! Hope you had a great one!

Change As a Mother

Lots of changes are going on in our house. David's company Raytheon has asked him to go back to work. His leave of absence will end on Feb 26th. So we decided to switch after he goes back to work. That means I'll bid farewell to my 10 years of job as a QA Engineer and become a full-time mother! I'm so looking forward to dive into that unknown yet exciting phase of life because I know it will be such a blessing to me and to our children in the future. At the same time, I ferverently pray that God will be with us in the process of this transation and calm down the "butterflies in my stomach": what if David's job is not stable? what if I try my best and still can't be the mother that God wants me to be? what if Emily and Andy can't learn at home as much as they would in the day care? what if ... Funny how I studied for years to have a job as a QA Engineer but I never took any course on how to be a good mother. Better to be late than never. As I was searching for the definition of a good mother, I came across this:

“Mother–what name has more thrilling associations than that of mother? From her we learned first to lisp a yet dearer name. By her watchful care were we kept from harm. Through many a dark night she watched our couch with tearful eyes, and without weariness she was swift to minister to every want, and by sweet and almost insensible influences she drew us from the ways of sin and led our feet into paths of righteousness and peace. Before our minds could grasp their meaning, simple formulas were fixed in our memories which should afterwards prove lights to guide our steps aright.

Awake, she taught us; and asleep, her form bent over us while in prayer she commended us to God…and taught our infant lips to lisp the name of ‘Our Father, which art in Heaven’.
And when the first fruits of this untiring vigilance appeared, how gladly did they clasp their new born children in their arms, and praise the Lord who had heard their prayers.

Who can estimate the influence, though unseen, that a mother’s instruction and example still exert? She follows him through the course of every day, and in every temptation her prayers surround him like a shield. Her bright example too, though not now seen, is remembered, and by it ‘She allures to brighter worlds and leads the way’.” ~Hugh A. White

From that, I saw a mother wholly devoted to bringing up children whose first affection is the Lord Jesus. What a wise mother! Lord, please make me like her … because once a child has been taught to “Seek first the Kingdom“, all else in earth and heaven will be given to him. Psalm 128:3 says:" Your wife will be like a fruitful vine within your house; your children will be like olive shoots around your table. " Deuteronomy 32:11 says:" like an eagle that stirs up its nest and hovers over its young, that spreads its wings to catch them and carries them on its pinions". What a high calling to all us mothers! Looking at my sweet child's beautiful face, I still can't believe she is mine. Often times I wished my eyes were the video camera that could download all the precious moments and save them forever so that I could replay again and again in the future. What a blessing it will be to see her and our soon-to-be-born little guy's sweet faces everyday as I do my job!

"For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. "(Jeremiah 29:11). Thank you Lord for reminding me again of the previlige you gave me and of your faithful love! Please help me to be the mother You want me to be.

Story III My Visa Experience (short version)

Since I came to America, applying for the visa to come back had always been a headache when I took a vacation in China. In 2005, I needed to apply for the visa in Mexico again before I went back home for a visit. All my friend told me that it was very dangerous to go there by myself. So I hired a service company to help me to get to Mexico and do all the preparation for the visa.

But two days right before the appointment, they told me that they couldn't get the permit to do that in Matamoros (the city where I was going to apply for the visa). It was Tuesday night at 7:00pm. My appointment was Friday morning and I was leaving early Thursday morning for Browsville. I didn't do any preparation because I totally relied on that service company. After hanging off the phone, I was so attempted not to go to the Bible study class but to look up the visa information - I only have two nights to prepare! But I decided to go to Barbara Meador's mentoring class and to rely on God's resource rather than mine. I need God's power more than my own strength. I prayed all the way to Barbara's house. In the end of the class, Barbara asked for the prayer requests . I shared my worry after everyone else finished their requests. Before I finished, one of the ladies in our group (of eight) said that it so happened her husband was working in Matamoros only for that week. And he stayed in a hotel in Brownsville (the city where I was going to stay). So he was crossing the border every day. Friday would be his last day in Matamoros. What was the odd for that to happen? I couldn't believe the prayer was answered in such a way and at such a speed!

Her husband Brian Price called me Wednesday and set up for the meeting in Brownsville. Brian is a wonderful guy. I am so glad to know him through this. He checked all the information before hand and took me to the consulate to get the visa. He talked to the Mexicans when needed, drove me back to Brownsville and returned to Dallas afterwards. And this was only one part of how God answered my prayers. Two of my friends Rebekah, Laura and I got to have a wonderful mini-vacation in South Padre Island after I came back to US because their relatives lived in Brownsville. So many incidences along the way told us that God was guiding us all the time to fully experience his greatness if we seek Him. We just couldn't say enough "I can't believe this ..." . God is awesome!!!

Philippians 4:6-7 (New International Version)
Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus
.

Story II - My Baptism

I came from a small village in Northwest of China. As a "good kid and all-around student" all through my school years, I became one of the few communists students in college. After several years of great job in Beijing , I decided to pursue a MBA degree to advance my career path. I requested the MBA program guides from different famous Universities in China . But none of them interested me. So I decided to try some Universities in America .

I went to the Internet and searched for "American Universities". "ACU ( Abilene Christian University )" showed up on the top alphabetically. I clicked through and liked the way they handled my application. Pretty soon I was accepted. After overcoming several difficulties in passport and visa, I arrived in America in August 1999.

Before long I realized that I was surrounded by Christians (my host family - Julie and Brent were the first Christians I met). I had no interest in becoming a Christian nor associating with any religion. Although many people reached out to me, I carefully kept a distance from them. Three month later, due to the lacking of the MBA students, we were advised to transfer to other schools. Finally I transferred to UTD and temporarily "got away" from my Christian friends who always "nagged" me around.

Two years later, one of my friends from ACU (Jean) moved to Dallas . She asked me to find a church family for her. We visited several churches until we found one. She invited me to church with her. But I always told her that I had more important things to do on Sundays. One day, she told me that church just started an English conversation program. I thought that was exactly what I needed - to improve my English with Americans. So I went. My worker (now is my dear husband David) and I used Bible as the textbook. We read stories after stories. Until one day, we read about the Great Feast, that God invited everyone to the feast, but people found all kinds of excuses for not coming. I suddenly saw myself in it. I was the one who refused God's invitation again and again! The next thing happened was the reading about Peter's fishing experience. Peter and other “Professional fishermen" fished all night and didn't catch anything. Next day Jesus, the “Professional Carpenter" asked them to follow him to catch the fish. I thought, if I were Peter, why would I, a fisherman, follow a carpenter to get the fish? But Peter gave Jesus a chance and followed him. As a result, they caught a whole bunch of fish, more than enough! I thought, maybe I should give Jesus a try and give him a chance to work in my life.

I started getting up early everyday to have a private devotional time, to read Bible, "the purpose driven life", and "the life you've always wanted", to pray, to journal and see what would happen. Two months later, I said to myself, I wanted to be like Jesus! I wanted to live a Christian life! I was ready for a whole lifetime of growing in my understanding of Christ and of the riches, power, and life that He has already given me! My life changed completely since then, no turning back. Yes, Jesus has the power to change and transform everyone's life, for better! It's been my greatest pleasure to tell my story to friends who don't know Jesus yet. I wish they will experience the reborn and the touch from God, to be alive and refreshed as I did.

My First Day in America

(In my last post, I talked about writing down my stories of God's faithful love. Here is the first one from my old journal.)

In China, I watched many American movies of robbery, fighting, murder, etc. Most scary, people are allowed to have guns. So, when I told my mother that I wanted to study in America, she was worried about me.

Nevertheless, I boarded on the plane to America on August 12, 1999. My destination was Abilene. When I arrived at Dallas, it was already 11:00 in the evening. I decided to stay for a night. So, I went to claim my luggage - a huge suitcase with everything in it. It was so heavy that I had to wait until a lady in the uniform came over. She grasped the carry handle, took a deep breath and yelled “Err”. “KATA” - The handle was broken. The luggage dropped to the floor heavily. Fortunately, I still had a puller handle. This airport (DFW) was quite different from the ones in China. The passengers had to call the taxi to be picked up (instead of just waving at the taxi drivers at the airport gates). I dragged the heavy suitcase to the paid phones next to the luggage claim area, above which there were some numbers of taxis and hotels. I suddenly realized that I didn’t have any coin to make a call.

I stood there wondering what to do next. “Hi, my name is Stephen, I came back from the business trip. Can I help you?” I turned my back and saw a young man with a close shaved head wearing a flabby T-shirt. I hesitated for a second and thought: Shall I trust him? … Well, I don’t know anyone anyway. So I told him it was my first day in America and I was looking for a hotel. He looked up those numbers on the wall, and checked the prices. After I picked one hotel, he said “I can drive you to the hotel if you don’t mind.” I looked at him again and said OK. It was one of my first conversations in English. We went through the revolving door and took the shuttle bus to another terminal (I would be lost if I was alone). His car was on the third floor. So we had to climb three stairs. The suitcase was so big for me. I dragged it this way, and it went that way. I was embarrassed. He couldn’t help laughing, “Let’s exchange our baggage.” He held my big suitcase in his arms and moved inch by inch while I pulled his carry-on suitcase. We finally reached his car, all in wet.

“Where are you going?” “ACU in Abilene.” “Did you call the school?” “No, I got the card of the person who works in the international office, but now it is too late to call …” “Oh, no, not late at all. Give me the card.’ I gave him the card. He called the teacher and told him there was a Chinese girl in Dallas. She was going to take a gray hound (which I told him - I was so used to take the buses in China) to Abilene tomorrow. Please arrange someone to pick her up. I was so grateful. We arrived at the hotel exhausted. He ran into the store nearby and bought two bottles of milk shake. I heard that American is serious about money. So I gave him 20 dollars for the driving. He refused, “Please take it back. Let’s save it until you get a job.”

After checking into the hotel room, he showed me where the hot water was, how to change TV channels, etc. I knew all of these, but still listened. Then, he found a piece of paper and wrote: Here’s what you are going to do tomorrow, 7:00 am get up; 7:30 have breakfast and check out; 8:15 take a taxi to the gray hound station. Here’s my number in case needed xxx.

It was almost 1:00 in the morning. He hugged me good night and smiled “Don’t cry on your first day in America, I know it is hard.” Just before he closed the door, he turned back: “One more thing. Tomorrow, change your shirt for Jeans and change your shoes for the running shoes. Your teacher won’t mind what you are wearing. Oh! Remember, I don’t know what it is in China, but here, don’t take a ride from a stranger ... Of course, today is an exception! And don’t go out at night by yourself. OK?” I held back my tears and nodded.

I was so moved that I couldn’t fall into asleep long after he left. What a nice guy! And what a wonderful day! I couldn’t wait to tell my mom what had happened. The next day, as soon as I got an email account, I told all my friends about my first day in America – the adventurous, touching, and unforgettable day. I met an angel!

The morale of this story is: when we are in an unfamiliar environment, remember that God is watching over us, protecting us; even when we don’t know it. Trust him!“Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” (Joshua 1:9)
